An Oatlands Wedding in Photographs

I photographed this wedding at Oatlands Historic House & Gardens in Leesburg, Virginia. The gallery includes close preparations, an outdoor ceremony, garden portraits and a tented reception. Alongside the couple, you will see the people around them: a child smiling during the ceremony, guests leaning into an embrace and a young photographer aiming her camera across a reception table.
Before the ceremony
The opening photographs stay close to the preparations. Hands adjust formal clothing; a makeup brush crosses the frame. Two men appear behind glass with the street reflected over them. These pictures give the wedding its everyday surroundings before the garden and ceremony photographs.
The bride lifts her dress through a doorway, looks upward in an elevator and watches through a vehicle window with her bouquet beside her. The photographs include those small movements between rooms and places, as well as the finished portraits.
Light and space in the garden
In the sunlit lawn photograph, the bride reaches toward her partner with trees and bright foliage behind them. The wider frame leaves room around that gesture. Later, a dark portrait beneath the veil draws attention to a small area of her face. The gallery puts those different kinds of light beside one another.
A garden path and wall give the wedding party a longer frame. Nearby, the musician and his hand drum bring another part of the gathering into view. Portraits are part of the coverage, but so are the people preparing, playing music and waiting around the ceremony.
The people around the ceremony
The couple face each other outdoors while a reader and other people stand nearby. In another photograph, a child smiles beside the bride. Close frames of joined hands sit alongside wider pictures of the gathering. Together, they show both the central exchange and the people who shared it.
The outdoor photographs also include an embrace, a kiss and a guest walking with a raised fist. Those gestures carry much of the feeling in this gallery. The grounds give them a setting, while the faces and hands keep the attention on the people.
A reception with room for everyone
Under the tent, guests embrace and lean toward one another at the tables. A speaker holds a microphone and a sheet of paper; the couple enter with their arms raised. The dance photographs move between a close view of the couple and a crowd of guests. Children join in, a trombone player appears among the celebration and the bouquet rises above the dance floor.
One of the reception photographs shows a child holding a camera near a table. Others include a playful dip, a limbo dance and a large group portrait. These are useful pictures to look at when choosing wedding coverage: they show how much of the gallery belongs to the guests as well as to the couple.
