VisArts is a working arts center in Rockville Town Center: galleries, studios and classrooms. That is the reason to marry there. The wedding happens inside a building where exhibitions are hung and classes run, not in a ballroom dressed to look like somewhere else. It sits at 155 Gibbs Street, inside the Arts and Innovation Center, with three private-event spaces: the Buchanan Room, the Rooftop and the Artists' Concourse.

Key Takeaways

  • Two spaces hold 190 guests. The Buchanan Room and the Rooftop are both published at up to 190, and the Buchanan Room drops to 160 once its permanent dance floor is in use.

  • The two spaces close two hours apart. Rooftop events must end at 10 PM; Buchanan Room events may run until midnight, which is also the venue-wide end time.

  • The Rooftop is an add-on, not a guarantee. It is held automatically when you book the Buchanan Room, but it is weather dependent, so the indoor room is the real plan.

  • Catering is closed, alcohol is not. You must use one of more than twenty approved caterers, with no outside caterers. You may supply your own alcohol, served by the caterer's staff.

  • New bookings are paused through September 30, 2026. Inquiries for later dates join a waitlist and are answered from October 1 in the order received.

What VisArts Actually Is

Most venues in this part of Maryland are one of three things: a hotel ballroom, a converted barn, or a country club. VisArts is none of them. It is a nonprofit arts organization that rents its own rooms out, which shapes the day in ways that are easy to miss on a site visit. The walls carry real artwork. The corridors are gallery corridors. VisArts is a 501(c)(3), and 20% of your rental fee is a tax-deductible donation.

The trade-off is that it is a public building. Galleries and studios keep their own hours, so the private-event spaces are what you are renting, and the layout is a set of rooms inside a working institution rather than a wing sealed off for the weekend. Read the floor plans before you fall in love with a room.

One practical consequence: exclusive use of the second-floor galleries and the Artists' Concourse is available for an additional charge, which is worth pricing before you assume the artwork is simply included.

The Three Spaces

VisArts publishes capacities for two of the three. Both are 190, and the difference between them is the dance floor.

The Buchanan Room

The Buchanan Room is the indoor event space, published at up to 190 guests, or 160 when the room's permanent dance floor is in use: a real dance floor that stays down, not a parquet square laid over carpet at the last minute. VisArts calls it award-winning and light-filled, and the light is the honest description. Buchanan Room events may run until midnight. The room's ceiling is exposed black steel with wood infill, with white fabric swagged across it and string lights run through the beams. Along one side, floor-to-ceiling windows look onto trees.

The Rooftop

The Rooftop is an outdoor terrace, also published at up to 190, the same number as the Buchanan Room. It is an add-on space, held automatically for you when you book the Buchanan Room, and it is weather dependent, so treat it as a room you may not get. Rooftop events must end at 10 PM, two hours before the Buchanan Room has to close.

The terrace is edged in boxwood hedge, which matters more than it sounds: it gives the ceremony a clean green backdrop and takes the rooftops and air-conditioning units out of the frame. Two ribbed cylindrical vents stand on the terrace like columns. Past the hedge, the skyline over Rockville Town Center, including the clock tower, sits behind everything.

The Artists' Concourse

The Artists' Concourse is a wide hallway connecting the galleries and studios, available for use with Buchanan Room events. No capacity is published. This is the space that makes a VisArts wedding feel unlike a single-room venue: white walls, artwork, polished floors, and a walk that is long enough to be worth photographing. It works as a cocktail hour, as a processional route, or as the place guests drift to when the dance floor gets loud.

What the Day Looks Like

The photographs in this guide are from a wedding I photographed at VisArts, and they follow the shape the building pushes you into. Ceremony on the Rooftop, with guests in rows of white folding chairs and the hedge wall behind the altar. Cocktails and portraits through the Concourse and on the wide outdoor stairs. Reception in the Buchanan Room, where the windows go dark behind the dancing and the room turns into itself.

That sequence is not a rule. VisArts will hold a ceremony indoors, and the rooftop is only yours when the weather allows, but it is the order these spaces want to be used in and the one the building makes easiest.

How the Two Curfews Shape the Timeline

VisArts runs two curfews, and between them they decide more of the day than any other fact about the building: the Rooftop must end at 10 PM and the Buchanan Room may run until midnight, so the last two hours of the reception are indoors whatever the weather is doing. The terrace is not an option after 10 PM.

Most timelines assume golden hour, then sunset portraits, then dancing. At VisArts that order has to be chosen on purpose rather than assumed. If you want the terrace in your photographs, the window closes at 10 PM, which in a summer wedding is not long after dinner and dessert. Give your photographer those two times before the schedule is written, because they decide when the light outside stops being available to you.

Choosing Between the Buchanan Room and the Rooftop

If your guest list is near 190 and you want dancing past 10 PM, the Buchanan Room is the answer and the question is already settled: the Rooftop closes two hours earlier and is not guaranteed. Choose the Rooftop as your ceremony space and the Buchanan Room as your reception space, then decide what you do if it rains.

Both spaces are fully accessible, so accessibility does not separate them. What separates them is the curfew, the weather exposure, and the fact that the dance floor costs you 30 guests in the Buchanan Room. At a list of 190 with dancing, the real capacity is 160.

Photographing a VisArts Wedding

  • The rooftop is open sky above a hard horizon. There is nothing to bounce light back at you and nowhere to hide at midday. The hedge wall is the single most useful thing on the terrace: a clean, even, dark-green backdrop that works at any hour and never blows out.

  • The Buchanan Room's windows are the trap. Floor-to-ceiling glass onto trees is a beautiful room and a difficult exposure. In daylight the window is far brighter than the couple standing in front of it. The frames that hold are the ones against the wood and steel ceiling and out on the dance floor, where the light is controllable.

  • Build time for the stairs. The pale stone plaza and wide outdoor steps with their blue-painted handrails are a short walk from the doors and give the bridal party a frame the interior cannot. Fifteen minutes there is worth more than fifteen minutes in a corner of the reception room.

  • The last twenty minutes of light belong on the rooftop. The hedge, the vent towers and the town skyline turn blue together. It is the one window in the day when the terrace is better than any room inside.

Planning Notes

  • Catering is not open. VisArts requires the use of one of its more than twenty approved caterers. No outside caterers.

  • Alcohol is self-provided, with a catch. You may provide your own, but it has to be served by the full-service caterer's staff. Beer kegs and drinking shots are not allowed.

  • The curfew is two-tiered. Rooftop events must end at 10 PM. Buchanan Room events may run until midnight, and all events must end by midnight. When summer camp is in session, Monday to Friday events must start at 5 PM or later.

  • Everything is accessible. VisArts states that all of its spaces, including the Buchanan Room and the Rooftop, are fully accessible.

  • Getting there is genuinely easy for guests. Three blocks from the Rockville Metro station on the Red Line. Drivers should use garage A or B at The Square, both free for the first 90 minutes. Avoid the Rockville Metro Station garage: it does not provide that free window, and its ticket is yellow rather than white.

  • The awards are specific. The Knot Best of Weddings Hall of Fame, and a Best of Weddings winner every year since 2019. Also a 2025 Best of Bethesda Readers' Choice finalist for place for a wedding reception, and a 2024 Montgomery Magazine Readers' Choice runner-up for best special-occasion venue.

  • The venue has been renovating. VisArts is pausing new event bookings and venue tours through September 30, 2026 while it makes operational improvements. Inquiries for dates after October 1 join a waitlist and the team reaches out from October 1 in the order received. Dates are not being held during the pause, and contracted events continue as scheduled. Confirm the current status before you plan around it.

VisArts Wedding FAQ

Is VisArts accepting wedding bookings right now?

VisArts is pausing new event bookings and venue tours through September 30, 2026 while it makes operational improvements. Inquiries for dates after October 1, 2026 join a waitlist, and the Private Events team reaches out beginning October 1, 2026, in the order inquiries are received. Dates are not being reserved or held during the pause, and currently contracted events continue as scheduled. Confirm the current status directly with the venue.

How many guests fit on the VisArts rooftop?

VisArts publishes a rooftop capacity of up to 190 guests, the same as the Buchanan Room. The practical number depends on the chair layout, the aisle, sound, decor, accessibility clearances and your cocktail plans, so treat 190 as a ceiling rather than a target.

What happens if it rains during a rooftop wedding?

The rooftop is weather dependent, so plan for rain from the start rather than as a fallback. Agree with VisArts and your planner on the decision deadline, the indoor ceremony space, the guest holding area, and how the room gets reset afterwards. The Buchanan Room and the Artists' Concourse are both indoors.

How late can a VisArts wedding run?

Rooftop events must end at 10 PM. Buchanan Room events may run until midnight, which is also the venue-wide end time for all events. When summer camp is in session, Monday to Friday events must start at 5 PM or later.

Can we bring our own caterer or alcohol?

No outside caterers. VisArts requires the use of one of its more than twenty approved caterers. You may provide your own alcohol, provided it is served by the full-service caterer's staff. Beer kegs and drinking shots are not allowed.
