In Croaker, Virginia, stands a sight that would make just about anyone stops in their tracks. 43 ghostly effigies of presidents past crowd together in the tall grass. Some of the 18-to-20-foot busts have crumbling noses. The statues are all that remains of Virginia’s Presidents Park, a now-defunct open-air museum where visitors could once walk among the presidential heads. But their presidential visions soon (literally) went bust. First, the park, which cost about $10 million to create, went belly up due to a lack of visitors in 2010. Then, doomed in part by location—hidden behind a motel and slightly too far away from colonial Williamsburg’s tourist attractions, the park went into foreclosure.
That’s where Hankins, who helped build the park, comes in. Before the land was auctioned off, he was asked to destroy the busts. Hankins didn’t feel right about it and offered to take the heads and move them to his 400-acre farm. So began the laborious process of moving 43 giant presidents, weighing 11,000 and 20,000 pounds, to a field ten miles away. Hankins estimated the weeklong process cost about $50,000.
Hankins’ field wasn’t officially open to visitors. But intrepid explorers and photographers have found ways of getting to the crumbling presidential ruin anyway.

Cory and Samantha are the creative and beyond exciting couple! They’ve contacted me with the idea to make their engagement photo-shoot, which they have been dreaming of. The idea was to make it in Dulles Airport as they were planning to leave D.C. soon at that time.
The couple told me that they are big fans of the Dulles typeface and that they like the idea of picturing romance against the backdrop of Dulles’ bland utilitarianism. This fascinating couple wanted their engagement photo-session to be different and unorthodox as they said: “with a low-key approach.” We’ve managed to make it all happen the way they wanted on the beautiful spring day. You can genuinely see this on their pictures from the photo-shoot.
As these guys are keen on adventures and exploration of the unknown lands, they took a train through The States on the same day after the shoot. They contacted me later on joyfully sharing that the train trip was fabulous – beautiful scenery from West Virginia to North Dakota to Oregon.

In the 19th century, hundreds of intersecting alleys existed behind DC’s blocks of rowhouses. DC’s hippest remaining Blagden alley is the great place to walk around, make pictures and capture great shared moments. It is one of the best spots for an Industrial style engagement session. Plus there are great restaurants in the Alley if you want to stop there for a drink in between!
